The best and worst movies of 2013

Thor  -  The Best of the Best

By Gary;

My first love is movies.  Hollywood can take us out of our everyday lives and into worlds of great wonder or terror.

That is the reason "Thor: The Dark World" ranks as the best movie of 2013.

Thor had the most difficult job of any film this year.  But they successfully melded impossible Norse myths with our modern world and with Science Fiction.  The CGI effects are beautiful.  The actors Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman and Anthony Hopkins are in top form.

Special Note - Tom Hiddleston as Loki is fantastic.  One of the best actors out there.

My Best Movies of 2013

  1. Thor: The Dark World
  2. Iron Man 3
  3. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
  4. R.I.P.D.
  5. Gravity
  6. Oz the Great and Powerful
  7. Star Trek Into Darkness
  8. Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters
  9. Oblivion
Tom Cruise's "Oblivion" was visually stunning and
much more entertaining than I expected.

So So Movies

Over the years I have seen far more of these films than I care to remember.

Elysium
Beautiful CGI effects of a future earth of extreme grinding poverty and death.  But I felt the plot did not come together at the end.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
Three hours of my life gone.  I hate this bloated, spastic movie on so many levels.  The only thing that keeps this film in the so so category is the incredibly well done dragon.

Still, Peter Jackson should hang his head in shame.  This film is a very long giant smelly turd.

Major Disappointments

After Earth
The winner for the steaming pile of shit award.  Will Smith is horrible and his son is unwatchable.

Man of Steel
For the love of God, please someone take the editor's ax to every scene with Kevin Costner and then shred the film clips.  Amy Adams should never have been hired.  She can't act worth a crap.  Erica Durance who portrayed Lois Lane in "Smallville" is a far, far better actress and should have been hired for the role.

The Wolverine
Huge Jackman in Japan  -  both confusing and boring.

World War Z
Wow.  About $200 million was spent to make a really crappy zombie movie.  AMC's "The Walking Dead" spent about $1.5 million for a one hour episode that was far more entertaining than this Brad Pitt turkey.

The Lone Ranger
Burn all copies.  Nuff said.

Oz the Great and Powerful
One of the best films of the year.  It is impossible to get the 1939 classic out of our minds.  But this James Franco prequel is a wonder to watch.  Plus in this film you get both wicked witches for one ticket price.

Ghostbusters meets Beetlejuice
The movie did not do well at the box office but
so what!  For pure escapism R.I.P.D. was lots of fun.

Man of Yawn
Too God Damn Fucking Long!  With too much screen time devoted to a worthless
Kevin Costner and the Kent family sub-plot.  Jor-El on Krypton was a bore.

You didn't see "Pacific Rim"?

Lots of films Armand. Missed that one. Looked to me like it was just a rip off of the Transformer series. Was it any good?

Yes, I reviewed it in my blog. It was not like Transformers. It was giant monsters (kaiju) vs. giant robots (jaegers).
